Rap in Senegal

Came across this clip from 2008. It is a short about the Sengalese rap scene and in it you can see some quite ‘true’ rappers dealing with political issues, pan-africanism and religion. Whoever produced this short seem to be coming from a political angle as we so often see when ever somebody decides to make a documentary about rap in Africa. But surely there must be another side of Sengalese rap? Surely there must be rappers inspired by gangster and player rap too?  At least that was what I asked myself when I watched the short documentary.

This guy apparently goes for some harder lyrics. Of course I have no idea what he is saying, but from what I can gather he is a Senegalese ‘gangster type’ rapper. I also know of straight gangster rappers of Sengalese origin who live in France. Of course they rap in french not wolof.  Though the short is a bit one sided it is worth watching. If anyone knows of any interesting rappers from Senegal, please let me know in the comments.
